Introduction

When I first arrived in Berlin from a small British town where trains are once an hour, I immediately marvelled at the convenience of the public transport system.  I loved the effortless glide of the U-Bahn as it came to a stop at the platform, the whoosh of the S-Bahn doors as they closed behind me and the jolting urgency of the trams as they raced to their next stop before the lights turned red.

What I grew to really LOVE about Berlin though is what you cannot see from a well-worn plastic seat. Exploring Berlin on foot is perhaps the best way to truly get to know the city. If you've got time for more than a whirlwind photo op at the standard sights then I urge you to don some sturdy shoes, grab a bottle of water and have some adventures!
